Membrane filter elements
Filtration/solid treatment and dewatering - in one step
Membrane filter elements are commonly used in processes where both
filtration/solid treatment and a dewatering process is required.
Examples are in production of titanium dioxide, in sugar factories,
fractionation of edible-oil and so on. A membrane plate has flexible
expandable walls able to squeeze out surplus moisture from the cake
A squeeze-media is fed into the plate and moves the membranes towards
the center of the chamber. When the squeezing is completed the media is
pumped back to the storage tank. Depending on temperature and
suspension it is possible to press up to higher pressures than by
traditional dewatering methods.
The technology is sensitive and needs to be
fully controlled by using advanced programs for
checking temperature, speed of squeezing and
minimum thickness of the cake.
Successfully used the technology provides
normally high flows out from filter, efficient cake
washing as well as a higher dry-matter content in the cake
Membrane filter elements are manufactured to
the same size as recessed plates and it is even
possible to use them in combination with
standard plates.
It is important to stress that one technique does not replace the other. However, in those
instances where a filling-limit in the chamber
can be reached that fulfils other requirements
for treatment of the suspension, this technology
makes possible all other sequences and
demands for complete treatment related to
both cake-washing as well as an effective dewatering
stage.
Where it is possible to use membrane technology the total time in the dewatering step
can be shortened as well as allowing for the
possibility of treating the cake.
